Why Consider a Sighthound

If you want a loyal, intelligent and gently affectionate companion, a sighthound could be the right addition to your home. Greyhounds, whippets, lurchers, salukis and deerhounds are built for speed and agility, yet they spend most of their day asleep on the sofa. That contrast is the whole appeal.

These are not high-maintenance dogs in the way many people expect. They suit active individuals and families who enjoy time outdoors, but they are just as happy curled up at home once they have had their run. If you are ready for a dog who loves both sprinting and switching off, a sighthound is well worth considering.

What makes the breed group special

Sighthounds are athletic, but they are also calm, sensitive and deeply attached to the people they trust. Their quiet nature makes them excellent house pets, and that same sensitivity means they respond well to patient, reward-led training. Get the relationship right and you have one of the most graceful companions you can own.

What to think about first

Sighthounds think differently from retrievers and collies. Everything they do is shaped by a strong prey drive, so recall and impulse control matter more than with most breeds. With the right foundations this is entirely manageable, and it is exactly the work I specialise in.

The other consideration is exercise. These dogs do not need hours of walking, but they do need the chance to stretch out safely and run. Secure space and solid recall give a sighthound the freedom it craves without the worry.

Sighthounds spend more time asleep than almost any other breed group. Give them one good run and they are content for the rest of the day.
