Sighthound Training Programme
Sighthounds think differently from retrievers and collies. They are sensitive, independent and driven by a powerful prey instinct, so they need a training approach built around their nature rather than against it. This guide sets out how I work with greyhounds, whippets and lurchers, and what reliable training looks like for the breed group.
The work runs alongside boarding here in NW London. Every hound that stays starts with a meet and greet and a one-night assessment, so I can tailor the training to the dog in front of me and keep you involved with daily WhatsApp photo and video updates throughout.
The Big Six commands
Everything starts with the core obedience commands. I build these patiently with lower repetition and higher reward, the rhythm sighthounds respond to best.
- Recall: coming back when called, the single most important command for a breed with strong hunting instincts.
- Stay: holding position until released, calmly and reliably.
- Wait: pausing on cue at thresholds, kerbs and gates.
- Sit: settling into a sit on command using positive reinforcement.
- Down: lying down and relaxing, the foundation for self-control.
- Heel: walking calmly at your side, on and off the lead.
Recall, done properly
A sighthound’s prey drive means a dependable recall is not a nicety, it is what keeps your dog safe if they ever get loose. I treat recall as the centrepiece of the programme.
- Begin in a calm, low-distraction setting and build difficulty step by step as the dog masters each stage.
- Reward generously with high-value treats and a happy, encouraging tone, so coming back is always the best thing on offer.
- Introduce distractions gradually, other dogs, people and wildlife, so the recall holds when it matters.
- Practise across different places and conditions, so your hound learns the command applies everywhere, not just at home.
Out on Hampstead Heath, with its open ground and constant temptations, that proofing is exactly where reliable recall is tested and won.
Lead work and walking calmly
Good lead manners come from awareness, not force. I teach the dog to stay tuned in to where you are.
- Use a martingale collar and positive reinforcement to keep your hound close and settled. Harnesses were designed for breeds like huskies to pull, so they are rarely the right tool for lead control.
- Change direction at random rather than letting the dog forge ahead, which keeps their attention on you.
- Use a consistent cue to mark when it is time to walk calmly and when it is time to play or run, so your hound understands what is expected.
- Reward calm walking and discourage pulling, building a relaxed lead over time.
Exercise and socialisation
Sighthounds carry real energy and need proper outlets for it. Running, chasing and play in a secure space are part of everyday care here, including the 350ft secure private garden and walks on Hampstead Heath.
They can also be aloof with strangers, so steady socialisation matters. I expose dogs to a range of people, animals and environments to build confidence and prevent shyness. This work should start early and continue throughout a dog’s life.
Consistency and patience
Sighthounds are independent and can be more challenging to train than many breeds. Progress is rarely a straight line, and that is normal. Short, regular practice and a calm, consistent approach achieve far more than long, pressured sessions.
Lower repetition, higher reward, and a full understanding of the prey-drive response that informs everything these dogs do.
If you would rather have an expert guide the work, this is exactly what I do. As a sighthound specialist, Canine First Aid certified, fully insured and bonded, I bring the breed-specific experience that makes the difference.
Train alongside boarding
The Residential Recall programme is an intensive, seven-night-minimum stay, from £850, so your hound learns and lives in one calm, structured block rather than visiting for isolated lessons. Boarding is a separate service, priced by weight from £77 a night, raw food included, sighthounds only, in a climate-controlled home licensed for eight dogs.
To talk it through, message my assistant to arrange a meet and greet. You can also read more about my method or browse the full boarding and training service.
